Palma is celebrating Libraries Day 2026 with a programme of cultural activities for all ages. Organised by the municipal library network, the initiative includes a literary vermouth, a walk through the neighbourhood of es Molinar, a dramatic reading workshop and storytelling sessions, among other activities designed to encourage reading across the community.

The main events will take place on Saturday 24 October, although the programme runs over several days and includes guided tours, workshops, talks and literary gatherings. This year, the celebration is taking place under the motto “Without library professionals, there are no libraries”, highlighting the important work of the people who make these cultural spaces possible.

Libraries Day in Palma: activities on 24 October

Libraries Day in Palma

Saturday’s programme features four highlights, all scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at different municipal libraries across Palma.

Literary vermouth at Joan Alcover Library

Joan Alcover Library will host a literary vermouth led by Margalida Mateu. Aimed primarily at adults, the event offers an opportunity to enjoy literature in a relaxed and informal setting.

Family literary walk through es Molinar

The library in es Molinar will be the starting point for the walk “Llegim el Molinar en família” (Let’s Read es Molinar as a Family), led by the cultural organisation Tres Serveis Culturals. The activity offers families a chance to discover the neighbourhood through literature and share the experience of reading together.

Dramatic reading workshop in s’Escorxador

At Josep Maria Llompart Library, located in s’Escorxador, members of Espill Teatre will lead a dramatic reading workshop for young people aged 12 to 17. Participants will explore texts through performance and spoken expression.

Children’s storytelling in Pere Garau

Encarnació Viñas Library, in the Pere Garau neighbourhood, will host the storytelling session “La nena que odiava els llibres” (The Girl Who Hated Books), featuring entertainer Pallasso Andreu. The activity is specially designed for children aged three and over.

More activities at Palma’s municipal libraries

The Libraries Day programme will continue after Saturday with further activities for different audiences.

  • Monday 26 October: the library in es Molinar will host “Un horabaixa de cinema a la biblioteca” (An Afternoon of Cinema at the Library), a short-film screening.
  • Thursday 29 October: at 6:00 pm, Cort Library will host a guided tour entitled “Ruta sobre la història del llibre i del coneixement a Palma: impremtes, centres d’ensenyament i biblioteques” (A Journey Through the History of Books and Knowledge in Palma: Printing Houses, Educational Centres and Libraries), led by Joan Carles Palos.

The programme also includes storytelling sessions from 5:30 pm at Joan Alcover, Encarnació Viñas and Son Cladera libraries. At the same time, Son Ximelis Library will host the literary discussion “La màgia de les biblioteques: records, lectures i experiències” (The Magic of Libraries: Memories, Reading and Experiences).

A week dedicated to encouraging reading in Palma

The activities began on 19 October, with the participation of the different venues that make up the municipal library network. Over the course of the week, the programme has featured music and creative writing workshops, play areas, storytelling sessions, talks, book presentations and reading workshops for children aged seven to ten.

The programme has also included guided walks through Santa Catalina and es Jonquet, led by Josep Borne Mas, as well as a guided tour of Cort Library.

Libraries Day is a nationwide initiative promoted by Spain’s Ministry of Culture through the Subdirectorate General for Library Coordination, with the participation of public and private libraries.

Through this celebration, Palma highlights its libraries as spaces for culture, learning and community, while recognising the work of library professionals and encouraging people of all ages to develop a love of reading.
