Homo Ludens is the exhibition on video games at CaixaForum Palma that analyses this phenomenon as an industry, means of communication and artistic expression in today’s society. Under the heading Video games to understand the present, curated by Luca Carrubba and designed by the Domestic Data Streamers studio, Homo Ludens takes an anthropological look at video games. A cultural, aesthetic and artistic phenomenon that is essential to contemporary mass culture.

The exhibition, which can be visited until 27 August 2023, features concrete examples of video games and contemporary works of art. It includes works by artists such as Bill
Viola and Barcelona’s Monica Rikić, among others, and offers an interactive and innovative tour, in which the viewer is the protagonist of a gamified and participatory experience.

It is currently estimated that more than 2.5 billion people are video game fans. The exhibition explores the way in which video games are present in many areas of our society and addresses the role of the game as a regulating practice in human activity throughout history. More than a history of video games, the exhibition, for audiences of all ages, offers a sociological vision that unites culture and technology, and industry and art.

The thesis of the exhibition confirms the existence of a world in which life and play are increasingly linked. In fact, nowadays, we play without realising it when we travel, when we learn or even when we fall in love. Produced and organised by the “la Caixa” Foundation, the exhibition brings together 56 pieces by 34 creators, including video games and works of art, and offers a plural and critical view of video games, analysed not only as an industrial product, but also as a cultural, aesthetic and artistic phenomenon. An essential exhibition on video games in Palma.
