The municipality of Calvià will dress up to celebrate the feast of Saint George, the patron saint of England, this 2024. It is a token of gratitude for the loyalty of English tourists over the years. This exciting initiative was announced by the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, during the World Travel Market tourism fair in London.
On the 26th and 27th of April, Palmanova’s Passeig de la Mar will be transformed into a stage full of music and fun, with a wide variety of activities to enjoy. From musical performances to a craft market, activities for the little ones, sporting displays and lively parades, Calvià’s Saint George’s Day party promises to entertain residents and visitors alike.
Although Saint George’s Day is an English tradition, in Calvià this festival will be merged with the activities organised annually in the municipality for International Book Day on 23rd April. This means that there will be a wide range of activities related to both commemorations, such as the presence of British books and writers, stands with English products and traditional British sporting competitions.
Controversy over Saint George’s Day
The announcement by Calvià Town Hall sparked controversy on social media, for celebrating a proper English festival on the island. However, the intention behind this celebration is to create a cohesive event that can be enjoyed by people of all nationalities, both residents and visitors, explained the council. Like the celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day in Santa Ponça, Saint George’s Day in Calvià will become another element of tourist dynamisation and deseasonalisation, in line with the municipal strategy 365 of organising events and actions outside the high season.
Mayor Amengual expressed his enthusiasm for this new tradition, highlighting its potential to strengthen the ties between Calvià and the United Kingdom, as well as to enrich the tourist offer of the municipality.
