The courtyard of Ca n’Oleo in Palma is transformed into a small stage for contemporary art with the arrival of Qüestions orgàniques (Organic Questions), an exhibition by artist Isabela Lleó featuring five alabaster sculptures. The exhibition, part of a new edition of Art al pati (Art in the Courtyard), can be visited until 5 January 2027.

Stone, light and forms inspired by nature take centre stage in this Isabela Lleó exhibition in Palma. The five pieces were created in Es Llombards and draw inspiration from elements such as water and love understood from a spiritual perspective.

Five alabaster sculptures inspired by nature

Alabaster takes centre stage in Qüestions orgàniques. Its translucent nature allows Lleó to play with light and transform a stone with a long sculptural tradition into contemporary forms evoking flowers, snails, eggs, cosmic forms and intertwined swans.

The five sculptures were created from around 800 kilos of alabaster sourced from quarries on the Spanish mainland. Working with this material, the artist respects the stone’s own rhythms until organic forms emerge in which matter, light and imagination come together.

The pedestals accompanying the pieces have also been revised and specially crafted for the exhibition, making them part of the presentation as a whole.

Isabela Lleó: between art, science and nature

Isabela Lleó’s career spans different disciplines. Trained in Fine Arts in Madrid, Munich and Hamburg, as well as in Psychology, she combines traditional techniques such as sculpture, printmaking and painting with video, photography and digital tools.

The human body and landscape play an important role in her work, which also explores geometry, mathematical algorithms and the search for new sculptural forms. This is complemented by her interest in Eastern schools of philosophy, Sinology and Japanese woodblock printing.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in countries including Poland, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, China and Italy. In Australia, she has taken part in “Sculpture by the Sea” on seven occasions, and in 2018 she presented her Seafoam sculptures at the Giardini della Marinaressa in Venice.

With Qüestions orgàniques, the Art al pati programme once again transforms Ca n’Oleo, home to the Balearic Government’s Directorate-General for Culture, into a space where visitors can discover contemporary art in Palma in a setting different from conventional exhibition venues.
