The history of the Nao Santa María and Christopher Columbus
The Nao Santa María was the flagship of Christopher Columbus’s expedition in 1492, accompanied by the caravels Pinta and Niña. This ship, also known as La Gallega, played a crucial role in the discovery of America. With 40 crew members on board, the Nao Santa María reached American lands on October 12, 1492. However, on December 25, it ran aground on the island of La Española, leading to the construction of Fort Navidad, the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
