The Museu de Mallorca is hosting, from 24 February to 10 May 2026, a major exhibition dedicated to Antoni Maura, one of the key figures in Spanish politics at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.

Curated by Manuel Oliver Moragues and organised by the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics, the exhibition offers an engaging and visual journey through his life, combining history, heritage and previously unseen pieces.

A journey through Maura’s life through documents and personal objects

Visitors at the Antoni Maura exhibition at Museu de Mallorca

Spread across three exhibition rooms, the show allows visitors to explore the personal and political universe of the Mallorcan statesman through:

  • Historical documents
  • Paintings and graphic material
  • Personal objects
  • A recreation of his original office, brought from the Fundación Antonio Maura

One of the main highlights is the screening of the documentary Maura en 12 traços, produced by the IEB and IB3, which helps place his figure in context from a contemporary perspective.

Seven sections to understand Antoni Maura

The exhibition narrative is structured into seven thematic blocks that present both the politician and the man within his environment:

  • The Maura Muntaner family
  • From Enlightenment thought to his education at the Institut Balear
  • The Maurist movement in Mallorca
  • His concept of politics
  • The opposition and the episodes of violence he suffered
  • The “Maura, no” campaign
  • The cultural and artistic side of his family

Beyond the institutional narrative, the exhibition shows how his political thinking was deeply shaped by his intellectual background and by the Mallorcan context in which he grew up.

A key figure in contemporary history

Widely regarded as one of Spain’s greatest statesmen, Antoni Maura was respected even by his political opponents, who acknowledged his independence and the absence of personal ambition in his public career.

The exhibition also helps visitors understand a particularly brilliant period in Mallorcan society, linked to the cultural drive of the Institut Balear and inspired by the ideas of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, which influenced an entire generation.

An exhibition to rediscover history from Mallorca

This cultural proposal not only reviews the trajectory of a historical figure, but also invites reflection on:

  • Mallorca’s role in national politics
  • The relationship between culture, education and political thought
  • The relevance of certain civic ideas today

With an informative and accessible approach, the exhibition becomes a perfect opportunity to discover a fundamental historical figure from a visual and educational perspective.
