Mallorca will take part for the first time in Cap Butaca Buida 2026, the Theatre Day initiative that aims to fill performance venues in a single day. On March 21, a total of nine theatres across the island will open their doors with a special programme designed to highlight the cultural, social and community value of the performing arts.

The initiative was presented in Palma with the installation of a giant theatre seat at Dalt Murada, a symbol marking the countdown to this day dedicated to theatre.

Mallorca’s participation in Cap Butaca Buida was announced at an event held at Ses Voltes, with representatives from the theatre sector and cultural institutions in attendance.

Among them were Toni Albaladejo, vice-president of ADETCA (the organisation promoting the project); Rafel Brunet, Director General of Music and Performing Arts at Palma City Council; Fàtima Riera, president of Illescena; and Marcos Ferragut, vice-president of ABSEDI (Associació Balear de Sales d’Espectacles en Directe).

During the presentation, Toni Albaladejo highlighted that the goal of the initiative is to demonstrate that theatre is an essential cultural good and that collaboration between institutions and the cultural sector can mobilise audiences to fill theatres in a single day.

For his part, Rafel Brunet emphasised that Mallorca’s participation reflects the joint work between public administrations and performing arts professionals, while Fàtima Riera noted that the event will allow public and private venues to join forces to create a collective cultural experience.

A cultural initiative that continues to grow

Cap Butaca Buida is a project promoted by the Associació d’Empreses de Teatre de Catalunya (ADETCA) together with several organisations from the performing arts sector and supported by various cultural institutions.

The initiative aims to fill theatres on the same day and reinforce the role of the performing arts as a space for cultural and social connection.

In its third edition, the Theatre Day already includes 236 participating theatres, 266 shows and 302 confirmed performances, figures that continue to grow until the event takes place.

The full programme can be consulted on the project’s official website, where performances can be filtered by location, venue or type of show.
