The Cathedral of Mallorca becomes one of the cultural epicentres of 2026 with the celebration of the Gaudí Year, a commemoration marking the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí and reaffirming the Seu of Mallorca as the only major historic work where the architect developed a comprehensive and creative intervention.

Declared an Event of Special Public Interest, the Gaudí Year 2026 places Mallorca within the international circuit of events dedicated to the Catalan architect, alongside the buildings in Catalonia, León and Cantabria where he also left his mark.

The Cathedral of Mallorca, Gaudí’s singular work

Between 1904 and 1915, Antoni Gaudí carried out a profound intervention in the Cathedral of Mallorca, following the guidelines of Bishop Pere Joan Campins. Unlike other partial interventions, the Seu is the only historic monument where Gaudí was able to apply a complete liturgical and artistic reform.

Key elements of his intervention include:

  • The relocation of the choir, freeing up the visual space of the presbytery.

  • The restoration of visibility of the episcopal cathedra.

  • The repositioning of the altar at the entrance to the presbytery.

  • The baldachin designed by Gaudí above the altar.

  • The transformation of the church’s interior lighting.

  • The ceramic mural surrounding the episcopal cathedra.

  • The design of the liturgical furnishings and the project to refurbish the Chapel of the Holy Trinity.

All of this makes the Cathedral of Mallorca a key work for understanding Gaudí’s religious, artistic and architectural thinking.
