The historic Hospes Maricel & Spa is entering a new chapter under the name Gran Hotel Maricel. This transformation goes beyond a change of identity, embracing a vision that seeks to revive the social, sophisticated and personal spirit that made the property one of Mallorca’s iconic social landmarks. Located in Cas Català, overlooking the Mediterranean, the hotel champions an approach to hospitality in which gastronomy, design, wellbeing and the pleasure of spending time by the sea take centre stage.
Opened in 1950, Maricel is now looking back at its history to shape its future with a contemporary concept that aims to recapture the essence of the great Mediterranean hotels.
Gran Hotel Maricel: the return of a Mallorca icon

The name change reflects a new philosophy of hospitality. Gran Hotel Maricel seeks to revive the idea of a grand Mediterranean home: a place open to meeting, conversation and enjoyment, going beyond its role as a place to stay.
The concept centres on warm, personalised service, anticipating each guest’s needs and paying attention to the small details that turn a stay into a memorable experience.
The property’s history is an essential part of this new chapter. Since opening in 1950, Maricel has been one of the prominent settings for Mallorca’s social life. Its sea-facing terraces welcomed international travellers, artists, actors, intellectuals and members of Mallorcan society, establishing the hotel as a Mediterranean meeting place.
This heritage now inspires a transformation that does not seek to recreate the past, but rather to reinterpret it through a contemporary lens.
Design inspired by Mediterranean Mallorca in the 1950s
The aesthetic transformation of Gran Hotel Maricel has been developed by Gabriela Palatchi and Gab Studio, drawing inspiration from the relaxed sophistication and social spirit of Mallorca in the mid-20th century.
Photography, cinema, art and design help shape a new visual identity in which light, water and the Mediterranean landscape take centre stage.
The colour palette combines blues, whites, stone and natural materials to connect the spaces with their surroundings. The transformation extends across different elements of the hotel experience, from outdoor furniture, parasols and Balinese beds to textiles, tableware, glassware, table linens and uniforms.
The aim is to create a coherent aesthetic in which every detail conveys a sophisticated yet welcoming style of hospitality, without detracting from the surrounding landscape.
Dining by the sea: Restaurante Maricel and Oysters Bar

Gastronomy is one of the pillars of the hotel’s new concept. Restaurante Maricel, led by chef José Vicente Tarín, celebrates Mediterranean and Mallorcan culinary traditions, with a particular focus on local and seasonal produce.
The offering also includes the iconic Desayuno Maricel, or Maricel Breakfast, conceived as a gastronomic ritual to be enjoyed overlooking the sea. This experience is an integral part of the property’s identity and reflects its desire to bring back the pleasure of taking time over a meal and enjoying the surroundings.
Since summer 2026, the hotel has also been home to Oysters Bar, located within the new Pool Club. This space expands the hotel’s gastronomic and social offering with a concept designed for guests, local residents and visitors alike, with oysters and champagne taking centre stage.
The aim is for the hotel to become part of Mallorca’s social life once again, rather than being exclusively a destination for overnight guests.
Wellbeing by the Mediterranean with BODYNA
Wellbeing completes the Gran Hotel Maricel experience. Its offering includes BODYNA, a space dedicated to personal care through treatments, rituals and experiences designed to help guests unwind and restore their balance throughout the year.
The hotel’s connection with the Mediterranean extends to this aspect of the experience, offering relaxation rooted in the surroundings and the slower pace of life by the sea.
A hotel for experiencing Mallorca beyond the stay
The new chapter at Gran Hotel Maricel opens up more ways to enjoy the property. Taking a leisurely breakfast overlooking the sea, swimming beneath its historic stone arches, spending the day by the pool, dining on the terrace, enjoying oysters and champagne at sunset or booking a wellbeing treatment all form part of the same vision of hospitality.
Located in Cas Català, in the municipality of Calvià, the hotel combines its architectural heritage and history with a cosmopolitan, contemporary outlook. Its concept seeks to balance sophistication with intimacy, making it a meeting place connected both to Mallorca and to those visiting the island.
Under the name Gran Hotel Maricel, the property is reclaiming an essential part of its historical identity and adapting it for a new generation of travellers. It is a vision of Mediterranean hospitality in which luxury is measured not only by the services offered, but also by time, attention to detail and the ability to enjoy the place itself.
