On the 19th of September, La Llotja de Palma will host the exhibition ‘Mirall’ by the renowned Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, an event eagerly awaited by art lovers in the Balearic Islands. The exhibition, organised by the Govern with the collaboration of the Ajuntament de Palma and the Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V., will be open to the public until 15th February 2025.
The exhibition ‘Mirall’ invites visitors to reflect on the dualities that define our existence: body and soul, matter and spirit, light and darkness, past and future. At the centre of the exhibition, two monumental stainless steel sculptures, ‘Invisible Laura’ and ‘Invisible Rui Rui’, stand 7 metres high. These works, placed facing each other but with their backs to each other, invite the viewer to explore the multiple layers of meaning in their apparent confrontation and isolation.
Jaume Plensa, known for his iconic sculptures in public spaces around the world, surprises again with a work that combines monumentality with introspection. His focus on duality recalls the mythological figure of Janus, the Roman god of doors and beginnings, with his two faces looking into the past and the future. In the exhibition ‘Mirall’, Plensa plays with the idea of reflection not only as a physical phenomenon, but as a metaphor for human interconnectedness, where our lives and emotions are reflected in others.
The choice of La Llotja de Palma as the setting for this exhibition is no coincidence. This building, a jewel of Mallorcan civil Gothic architecture, has witnessed the commercial and social history of the island since its construction in the 15th century. Today, it has established itself as a benchmark space for contemporary art in Mallorca, hosting exhibitions by leading international artists such as Pedro Cabrita and Julian Opie in recent months.
