Residents of the Balearic Islands aged over 14 can enter with a photograph taken on the day of the eclipse. Four prizes will be awarded, including \u20ac500 for the winning image.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The <strong>total solar eclipse on 12th August 2026<\/strong> will not only be visible from Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands. It could also become the subject of a prize-winning photograph in a competition organised especially for this astronomical event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Directorate-General for Universities, Research and Higher Artistic Education has launched <strong>\u201cShadows of the Eclipse\u201d<\/strong>, an initiative designed to bring together photography, creativity and science communication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The competition particularly invites participants to capture <strong>the shadows and lighting effects created by the eclipse<\/strong>, ranging from shadows projected during the phenomenon to creative interpretations inspired by the relationship between light, darkness and the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The competition forms part of the initiatives promoted by the science communication group of the Commission for the Management of Actions Related to the 2026 Total Solar Eclipse.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can enter the eclipse photography competition?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The competition is open to <strong>anyone aged over 14 who is registered as a resident of the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Participants under the age of 18 will require authorisation from their legal representative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Each person may submit <strong>only one photograph<\/strong>, which must have been taken personally by the participant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Both amateur and more experienced photographers can therefore enter, provided they meet the requirements set out in the competition rules.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46996 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Photography requirements<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The image must be directly linked to the day of the eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The main requirements are:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>The photograph must be <strong>original and taken by the participant<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It must have been taken <strong>on 12th August 2026<\/strong>, the day of the eclipse.<\/li>\n<li>The photograph must have been taken within the <strong>Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Each participant may submit only <strong>one photograph<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Digital files will be accepted in <strong>JPG, JPEG or PNG<\/strong> format.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographs generated wholly or partially using artificial intelligence will not be accepted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The theme focuses on the shadows and lighting effects produced by the eclipse, meaning that the photograph does not have to show the solar disc directly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The competition aims to encourage people to observe how their surroundings change during the phenomenon and to use photography to capture its effects from a scientific, artistic or creative perspective.<\/p>\n<h2>Prizes of up to \u20ac500<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cShadows of the Eclipse\u201d includes four cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The <strong>first prize is worth \u20ac500<\/strong>, while the second-place photograph will receive \u20ac250 and the third \u20ac125.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">There will also be a <strong>\u20ac125 young photographer prize<\/strong> for participants under the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The prizes are:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>First prize: <strong>\u20ac500<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Second prize: <strong>\u20ac250<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Third prize: <strong>\u20ac125<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Young photographer prize, for under-18s: <strong>\u20ac125<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to submit your photograph<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Although the photographs must be taken during the eclipse on 12th August, the submission period will begin the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Entries can be submitted <strong>from 13th to 26th August 2026, inclusive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Entries must be submitted online through the procedure available on the <strong>Electronic Office of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Participants should keep the original photograph and check the full competition rules before submitting their entry to make sure that all requirements are met.<\/p>\n<h2>The photographs will be exhibited in September<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The photographs entered in the competition will also have another opportunity to be seen by the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">They will form part of an <strong>exhibition during European Researchers\u2019 Night 2026<\/strong>, scheduled for <strong>25th September<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The awards ceremony for the winning photographs will also take place on the same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The initiative aims to extend awareness of the eclipse beyond 12th August itself and bring together different perspectives on how one of the year\u2019s major astronomical events was experienced across the Balearic Islands.<\/p>\n<h2>How to photograph the eclipse safely<\/h2>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Anyone planning to photograph the phenomenon should also take the necessary safety precautions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Balearic Government reminds photographers that capturing the Sun directly requires <strong>approved protection and filters specifically designed for solar observation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Sun should never be viewed directly through a camera, viewfinder, telescope, binoculars or other optical equipment without suitable solar protection, as this can cause serious eye damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The concept behind \u201cShadows of the Eclipse\u201d also makes it possible to look for other compositions without pointing the camera directly at the Sun: projected shadows, changes in light across buildings or landscapes, silhouettes and other effects produced by the eclipse can all become the focus of a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>12th August 2026<\/strong> will therefore offer another way to take part in this astronomical event from Mallorca: observing how the light changes, looking for a
