The Balearic Government and the Directorate-General for the Merchant Marine have issued specific recommendations on navigation, anchoring, watchkeeping, protecting Posidonia seagrass and returning to port.

The solar eclipse on 12th August 2026 in Mallorca will also be visible from the sea. In fact, the large number of boats expected to head out during the afternoon has led the authorities to prepare a specific operation and issue recommendations for anyone planning to go sailing.

The total phase of the eclipse will occur around sunset, approximately between 8:30 pm and 8:34 pm, when there will be a significant drop in ambient light for a brief period.

Watching the phenomenon from a boat can provide an unobstructed horizon and an exceptional perspective, but the authorities remind skippers that watching the eclipse does not exempt them from any of their safety responsibilities.

The Directorate-General for the Merchant Marine has approved a specific resolution containing recommendations for recreational craft during the event.

Can you go out by boat to watch the eclipse in Mallorca?

Yes. There is no general ban on taking a boat out to sea to watch the eclipse.

However, the trip should be planned more carefully than on a normal day at sea because of the large number of boats that may gather in certain areas along the coast.

Before setting sail, it is advisable to plan the route, the duration of the trip and the location from which you intend to watch the eclipse.

You should also check the latest weather forecast before departure and monitor conditions while at sea, as well as informing family members or other contacts of your planned sailing area and estimated return time.

Check your boat before setting sail

Planning should include checking the main safety and navigation equipment on board.

The Balearic Government recommends checking the communications and navigation equipment beforehand, ensuring that all statutory lifesaving equipment is available and checking that the navigation lights are working properly.

During the day it will be particularly important to maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 16 and pay attention to any instructions issued by Maritime Rescue.

One restriction remains exactly the same as on any other day: the maximum number of people authorised by the vessel’s certification must not be exceeded.

The exceptional nature of the eclipse does not allow boats to carry more passengers than legally permitted.

The skipper must keep watching the sea, not the eclipse

Distraction will be one of the main risks.

During the eclipse, numerous anchored vessels may be sharing the same waters with boats moving slowly and others returning to port or heading towards different observation areas.

The Directorate-General for the Merchant Marine reminds sailors that compliance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) remains compulsory.

The skipper must maintain an effective visual and auditory lookout at all times.

For this reason, whenever possible, it is recommended to designate another person on board to watch the eclipse, allowing the person in charge of the vessel to remain focused on navigation and surrounding maritime traffic.

Where can you anchor to watch the eclipse?

Boats will not be able to anchor just anywhere.

Vessels wishing to remain stationary during the eclipse must stay outside navigation channels, port manoeuvring areas, commercial anchorage areas, port entrances and any other location where they could interfere with maritime traffic.

A sufficient safety distance from other vessels must also be maintained.

The chosen location must be suitable both for safe navigation and for protecting the marine environment.

This is particularly important in Mallorca because of the extensive areas of Posidonia oceanica seagrass.

Extra surveillance to protect Posidonia seagrass

The Balearic Government expects a high concentration of boats during the afternoon and evening of 12th August and will reinforce the Posidonia Surveillance Service.

In Mallorca, the operation will have a particular presence in areas including Sóller, Andratx and Colònia de Sant Jordi, as well as at other locations across the archipelago.

The operation will be intensified during the days leading up to the eclipse and will be coordinated with Marine Reserve, Natural Areas and Environmental Officer vessels.

The Posidonia Surveillance Service will also carry out an information campaign aimed directly at skippers.

The key recommendation is to prevent both the anchor and chain from coming into contact with Posidonia seagrass meadows and, wherever possible, to use the environmentally friendly mooring systems available.

The eclipse does not alter the existing obligations to protect this marine ecosystem.

How to watch the eclipse from a boat

The rules for protecting your eyes are exactly the same at sea as on land.

Never look directly at the Sun without specific protection, except during the brief phase of totality and always following the official recommendations applicable to the particular location from which the eclipse is being observed.

During the partial phases, approved glasses or filters specifically designed for viewing solar eclipses must be used.

Conventional sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection.

Binoculars, telescopes, cameras or other optical devices should not be used to look directly at the Sun unless they are fitted with certified solar filters specifically designed for that equipment.

Navigation lights may be particularly important

The eclipse will take place around sunset and there will be a significant reduction in ambient light during the phase of maximum obscuration.

For this reason, the correct operation of the navigation lights should be checked before setting sail.

The authorities recommend keeping them switched on whenever visibility conditions make this advisable so that the vessel remains clearly visible to other maritime traffic.

It should also be remembered that the phenomenon will end at almost the same time as night falls, meaning that much of the return journey to port may take place in low-light conditions.

Can the weather change during the eclipse?

The Balearic Government warns that slight local variations in temperature and in wind speed or direction may occur during the eclipse as a result of the temporary cooling of the lower layers of the atmosphere.

These effects are expected to be limited, but sailors are advised to continue monitoring the weather and sea conditions throughout the trip.

Given the exceptional nature of the day, weather conditions should be checked again immediately before setting sail, even if the trip was planned several days in advance.

Be careful on the return: many boats may head back at the same time

Another potentially sensitive moment will come immediately after totality.

Many skippers are expected to decide to return to port at almost the same time, potentially resulting in a high concentration of vessels around harbour entrances and access points to yacht clubs and marinas.

For this reason, yacht clubs and marinas are advised to stagger vessel movements where necessary and reinforce surveillance.

For sailors, the recommendation is simple: follow the instructions issued by the port and do not rush.

Waiting a few minutes before starting the return journey may be preferable to joining the busiest period of boat traffic.

Mallorca’s ports will reinforce surveillance

Ports de les Illes Balears will also implement a specific operation for 12th August.

According to the plans announced by the Balearic Government, directly managed ports will have a minimum of three port officers on duty and will extend their operating hours until 11:00 pm.

Instructions issued to the ports include reinforced surveillance of vessel arrivals and departures, particular attention to harbour entrances and keeping radio communications open to facilitate orderly manoeuvres.

Checks will also be carried out to ensure that vessels do not exceed their authorised maximum number of people on board.

The ten vessels operated by the Coastal Surveillance Service will also reinforce preventive duties and may provide support to the Guardia Civil, emergency services and other competent authorities.

Plan ahead to watch the eclipse from the sea

Anyone planning to watch the eclipse from a boat in Mallorca should avoid improvising their trip on the afternoon of 12th August.

Choosing the sailing area beforehand, checking the weather, identifying suitable places to stop without damaging Posidonia seagrass, checking equipment and planning a staggered return will all be particularly important.

Instructions and safety measures may also be updated depending on weather conditions, expected visitor numbers and decisions taken by the maritime authorities.

It is therefore advisable to check the latest official information from the Balearic Government, Maritime Rescue and the relevant marina or yacht club again before setting sail on 12th August.

The eclipse will also be an exceptional event from the Mediterranean, but the priority remains the same as on any other day at sea: sail safely, respect other vessels and protect the marine environment.

Watching the total solar eclipse on 12th
