Photo: GOB<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Floral offering at Plaza de Cort: Second edition<\/h2>\n<p>Today, Plaza de Cort will once again host the floral offering to King Jaume I for la <strong>Festa de l\u2019Estendard<\/strong>. The Palma City Council has decided to keep this location, setting aside the traditional Plaza Espanya\u2014where it was usually held\u2014since they believe Cort is a more fitting setting for the ceremony.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Relocation in 2023:<\/strong> Last year, the offering was moved to Cort due to construction work in Plaza Espanya.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reasons for the decision:<\/strong> Even though renovations at Plaza Espanya were completed this summer, the statue of King Jaume I restored during those works will not, in the end, be the focal point of the celebration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Festa de l\u2019Estendard<\/strong>: Medieval origin<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Festa de l\u2019Estendard<\/strong> is celebrated on December 31st in Palma to commemorate the entry of Christian troops into the city in 1229. This conquest marked Mallorca\u2019s inclusion in Christian Europe. In fact, the festivity dates back to the years immediately following the conquest, making it one of the <strong>oldest traditions on the island and in all of Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Ceremonial and protocol<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Fiesta Proclamation (December 30th):<\/strong><br \/>\nThe festivities begin the day before with institutional events. The city council attends the singing of the Salve at the Church of San Miguel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wreath-laying ceremony for Jaume I:<\/strong><br \/>\nUntil last year, this was held in Plaza Espanya. Now, the new location at Plaza de Cort is confirmed, where organizations, institutions, and the City Council pay tribute to the conquering monarch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Main Day (December 31st):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Placing the royal standard<\/strong> in the center of Plaza de Cort, while the anthem \u201cLa Balanguera\u201d is played.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procession to the Cathedral (La Seu):<\/strong> Led by the mounted police, Tamborers de la Sala, the Balearic Brotherhood of Cavallers de Sant Jordi, cavallets, cossiers, and the city council.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concelebrated Mass in the Seu:<\/strong> Featuring traditional dances that enhance the solemnity of the event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Return to Cort:<\/strong> The banner is raised once again to the tune of \u201cLa Balanguera,\u201d and \u201cLa Colcada\u201d by Pere d\u2019Alc\u00e0ntara Penya is performed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>A living legacy<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medieval Roots:<\/strong> The Festa of l\u2019Estendard dates back to the earliest years of the conquest, retaining medieval features that set it apart from other celebrations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical Evolution:<\/strong> It has undergone changes over the centuries to adapt to new social and political realities while preserving its foundational essence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collective Demonstration:<\/strong> Today, it includes the designation of the city\u2019s Illustrious Citizens, among other institutional acts.
